Costume, Art and Social Justice…Sunday Reads

With costumes on our minds and art in our souls, we spend time thinking about the benefits these elements have outside of just aesthetics and fun.

For our Sunday reads, we look into the work of Nick Cave for inspiration on artistic costumes with a message of social justice and love for all.

Check out this New York Times article for more about

Nick Cave’s Soundsuits and his other art projects

Back to school means change and change for kids is hard.

“Action” Jackson splatter painting in action! (Age 4)

Once in the consistency of the classroom, and having  formed trust and boundaries with our young students, we were all set for the chaos of

“Action” Jackson Splatter-Painting

In our first day, we are settled in with new friends, a new environment and a new outlook on painting!

Happy Summer Art-Making!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG FOR ART IN THE PARK

What a beautiful week to make art in the park…Central Park! We made like an Impressionist and went en plein air for our 6-9’s Art Adventures.

Our challenge: to paint a landscape outside using a combination of 3 materials- pencil, craypas AND watercolor.

We practiced some tree drawing techniques: the Y technique- drawing branches in the shape of Y’s!

We learned different techniques in watercolor & wax resist with craypas

and background, mid-ground and foreground to capture a more realistic landscape

Happy Spring! Sakura Matsuri. Cherry Blossoms. Bonsai. Japan.

This weekend is Sakura Matsuri at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens! Aka the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. In celebration of this traditional Japanese event and beginning of Spring, we created our own version of cherry blossom bonsai tree sculptures. Building an armature from wire was key in order to create a balanced structure to add layers of clay and cherry blossoms made of tissue paper to our miniature tree. The results were beautiful!
